Variable Speed Pump?

Current Equipment:

  • 24’ Round Above Ground Pool
  • Pentair Clean & Clear CC100 filter
  • Pentair Opti-Flo 1.5HP Pump (340073)
  • Aqua Cal SQ175A Heat Pump
  • 1.5" PVC Plumbing

I have to run the pump on high-speed in order to get enough flow for the heat pump to work which I think is pretty inefficient. Could I use a variable speed pump to save energy or do you have any other thoughts on something that would be better?

Yes, you could use a variable speed. Ideally, you’d run it on a lower speed to circulate the water and only use the high speed for the heat pump.

We have VS pumps specifically for above ground pools but they are only 1.1HP. Another option would be the Pentair SuperFlo VS model EC-342001. It is a 1.5HP variable speed pump with a service factor of 1.47 (total HP 2.2). It may require some additional plumbing because the ports won’t line up perfectly with your existing plumbing.
