upgrade Legacy pool pump motor

Hi-

I have a Century Centurion pool pump part 7-177450-03 that is failing.  Couple questions:

  1. Does this pump have a starting capacitor in addition to a run capacitor?  Replaced the run capacitor but the motor still starts hard.  Motor shaft turns easily though.

2.  If I need to replace the motor, I would like to upgrade to a variable speed motor.  Pump model is a pentair WFE-4 with square flange.  What motor(s) would be the used in replacement?

Hello Tom - We’d be glad to assist you.

  1. The 7-177450-03 (B2841V1) does not have a start capacitor. It only has a run capacitor.

  2. There are two options for the replacement. The first is the Century ECM16SQU. This is the 1.65 total HP variable speed motor.  If you have a salt water chlorine generator or a booster pump, we recommend the second option. That would be model ECM27SQU. The ECM27SQU is a 2.7HP motor that features an auxiliary load. The aux load is what can turn the salt  system or booster pump on and off. You may be thinking the ECM27SQU is way too much HP. It won’t be because your impeller is still designed for a full rated 1HP. Also, it won’t cost you more to operate. You’ll still run that motor on a low speed for maximum energy savings.

We recommend replacing the seals when you replace the motor. The seal kit for the Pentair Whisperflo WFE-4 is GOKIT32. We also offer the GOKIT32SALT for salt pools.

I’m interested in doing the same thing.  I’m confused that you recommend ECM27SQU.  That is a 48Y.  The motor that we’re replacing is 56Y.

A 48Y frame can replace a 56Y frame motor. The only difference is that the body of the 48Y motor is thinner and a little bit longer than the 56Y. However, it will bolt up to the seal plate the same way.
