Some interesting stats thus far …2024 Chlorine use vs. 2025 Chlorine use…be interesting if this trend continues throughout july and august…might be too early to tell if solar cover and keeping CYA a bit higher is making ALL the difference…
The solar cover and the CYA will indeed make a difference in your chlorine consumption!!
Calcium levels are not terribly important in a vinyl-lined pool, but should be kept in the ideal range to avoid potential damage to some metal parts (my recommended range for a pool like yours is a minimum of 50, so you are well within range).
Pool Party this weekend…roughly 10 swimmers…what is a good starting Chlorine level for the day?
Thanks!!!
That sounds like a good party!
I would get it up to your SLAM level before the party (SLAM or Shock levels are 40% of your CYA level. A CYA of 50 will allow you to raise the chlorine to 20). That is still safe for people to swim in and safe enough to be able to go down a bit and keep your sanitization adequate.
Pro tip: Check it shortly after the party to see where it is at (if nothing else, it’s a good educational experience), especially if the party guests are your kids’ sweaty soccer team after a day in the hot sun.
Suppose to be mid 80’s too…7.3 ppm = 1 gallon…I don’t think the wife would like 3 gallons poured in, let alone 2 gallons…I’ll get it up to 12-15ppm (i was in the pool when it was dark green filled with rocks, badminton racket, coping covers, algae, and lived to tell the story, but wife is still on the old school train of thought where it should be 1-3ppm)…one kid is actually coming from a soccer game…one thing for sure…be interesting to see how quickly it drops (chlorine ppm)…fun science experiment…
Thank you!!! Of course, you’re always welcome to join too!!!
Raised it to 13.3 tonight…one gallon after nightly test.
Only lost 5.1 from the party…Not too bad…chaos…12 people at one point…lost some water due to splash out (cannonballs, in and out of the pool, kids just being kids playing silly stupid splash games)…little stressful, first time with this amount of people with the new liner…floaties popped…but all worth it…we survived!!!
Can’t believe we’ve gotten to this point…pool is at 90…crazy!!!
That is great to hear! You can see where you could easily have issues if a weekend pool party pulls the chlorine level down by 5 if you had the chlorine level at the “pool store” recommended level of 1-3. An educated pool owner is our best customer (and is a HAPPY pool owner)!!
Happens all the time I bet…pool stores are making out big $$$$$ every time there is a pool party…1-3 PPM…you’re going to be SOL…
Pool was almost 94 degrees yesterday…like a hot tub…got a couple cool days coming, hopefully get the pool under 90…
That’s pretty warm - even for me!!! Are you taking the solar blanket off of it? That will cool it off a bit - especially overnight.
Yeah…we have two days of cool weather ahead of us…dropped down to 86 by this afternoon…it was pretty nuts…i hate losing water to evaporation…so i kept cover on, but we’re good now…wife loved it!!! little too hot for me, especially after a workout…but we’re good now in mid 80’s.
Here is the plan for vacation:
Solar cover on
Pump 24/7
I’ll pump the chlorine up to 13.5 ppm roughly .
28 oz of chlorine (+1.6 roughly) on M/W/F poured by the neighbor…got three bottles prefilled under the deck with a gift card.
I think we should be good to go!
Wish us luck!
just bumped it up to 15.3 to err on the side of caution…rather come home to a super chlorinated pool than an under chlorinated pool…
Came home to a crystal clear pool. Back up to 90+ degrees…we had a lot of rain, water was almost up to the skimmer…a little scary…but backwashed until it got under the top screw…didn’t test chlorine level yet…we swam already, but will swim one more time…being a little cheap with the drops…Thanks again!!!
WoWoW…after swimming in the pool twice with the kids…cover off for 7 hours during a 90 degree day…we ended tonight with 5.2…I’m glad I bumped it up to 15.3…and did 3 days of 28 oz…
Real Talk Rich:
What is the best way to clean the vinyl walls, specifically the area above the water line??? Any special chemical? Cloth to use? how often?
Want to see if I can get this liner to last 15 years…any help on how to increase the longevity, all ears open. Please and thank you!
With all the recent rain, our p Dropped in the low 7.0’s, roughly 7.2…wait it out a few days and see? Or add baking soda? Please advise.
Hey Rich,
Eyes are telling me the ph is a tad low, but alkalinity is at 120 (adj 107 with CYA of 40)…but if I manually raise the pH (baking soda / soda ash)…alkalinity will rise then that will be out of whack…do I just hope the pH naturally rises? Please advise.
