spring check valve

Hello,

I just installed a new pool pump.  I placed a clear spring check valve at the suction side of the pump.  I am unable to prime.  I fear I placed the wrong type of valve as the suction of the pump cant open the spring valve.

Do you think this is the case?

It could be that the tension of the valve is too much for the pump to open. Also, make sure the check valve is facing the correct direction. It’s possible that it is plumbed in backward.
