Will a snake really work to unclog? My local pool store says that it won’t because of the 90 degree fittings.

That has been my experience as well with a snake, there are too many 90’s to make it effective. I have had hit and miss success with a product like this Hydraulic Drain Flusher The most successful thing is going with a C02 Gas Canister and blowing out the lines, most times this can be done through a pool company for $25 - $100.
