I’d like to ask for some advice on replacing my pool pump or motor from single speed to VS drive.
Here’s the existing pump/motor combo:
Pentair PART# 7-177451-03 1.5hp
FR Y56Y
Type CX
I’m a licensed journeyman electrician and industrial is my line. Pretty well versed with motors and VFD’s.
The existing pump is about 10 years old. Should I replace just the motor or the whole pump assy?
What equipment do you suggest to retain the performance?
Would VS pump be able to run a Zodiac G3 or any other vacuum?
Do I have to change the inlet and outlet valve configuration depending on the VS pump speed?
By the way, it’s a 15,000 gal pool with 2 skimmers and vacuum cleaner, also have one waterfall (which is normally off/ valved out). There are 2 diverter valves for inlet and oulet.
I’m I going to need electrically operated valves?
Thanks,

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the post! Your current motor has a True HP (THP) of 2.21 we arrive at this from your HP of 1.5 x the service factor of 1.47 = a 2.21 THP. This would mean that you cannot go with the 1.65 THP variable speed motor and you would need the 2.7 THP variable speed motor for $637 If you stayed with your current impeller then on the highest speed of this motor you would only be outputting 2.21 THP of water and not 2.7 THP of water (by the way you would be paying for the operation cost of the 2.7 THP power and only getting 2.21 THP of output).
With this being said I would suggest the complete Speck 2.4 THP Variable Speed Pump this would be the complete pump assembly and variable speed motor and we have this on sale for $669.
Yes the VS pump would be able to run your vacuum but you will need to bump up the RPM’s so you have adequate suction. Once you get the speed determined for your cleaner you can set this up as one of you preset’s (i.e. you set up a function for cleaning and just press the button on the motor and it goes to the speed you have pre-deteremined for cleaning).
You may have some minor replumbing as most likely the inlet and outlet port on the Speck Pump are not in the exact location of your current pump. As far as the valving or the automated valves go you would not need to replace these or add these based on the variable speed pump. You may want to replace or add these items but this decision would be completely independent of the variable speed pump. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank You
Patrick
