I wanted to get some information on a replacement motor for my Whisperflo WF-28. My current motor, that has said bye bye, is a 2hp 3450rpm motor. My pool is approximately 18,000 gallons. The pump is strickly used to circulate, filter and run 4 small deck jets. The deck jets are throttled independently and usually run about 25% open to control the flow. The motor has lasted approx 10 years. I’m currently looking at other options. The pump is in good condition, but I will need a replacement motor. My pool system is controlled by Pro-Logic.
So I have a couple of questions:
I have been told that I really don’t need a 2hp motor for my pool. I have been told that it is over kill. So given my size pool of approx 18,000 (timers set to run 6-7 hrs a day), can a 1.5 hp motor be used to conserve power?
Do they make a 2 speed motor for my WF-28 pump? I would like to get a gasket kit as well for the motor replacement.
If a 2 speed motor can be coupled to my existing WF-28 whisperflo pump, can it be controlled by my Pro-Logic control system timers or do I need to get the 2 speed motor with the attached digital timer?
Thanks, and need to get whatever I need ASAP.
Hi SdupontJr,
Thanks for the detailed post! You could go with a 1.5 HP motor but this would require that you change out your impeller from a 2 HP impeller to this 1.5 HP UpRated Whisperflo Impeller Now if you wanted to replace with a 1.5 HP Dual speed motor then you would go with this 1.5 HP Dual Speed UpRated Motor. When replacing your motor we would suggest a Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GoKit32
This dual speed pump can be controlled by your ProLogic but will require the purchase of an additional ProLogic Relay you will want to check that you have an additional open spot on your ProLogic for an additional relay. To further explain how the relays work, you would use the relay you are currently using for your filter pump, this relay turns the pump on and off the second new relay is used for switching between the high and low speed.
So to go with a 1.5 dual-speed motor that is controlled by your ProLogic you will need the Motor, Impeller, Tune Up Kit and Relay (remember to check to see if you have space for an additional relay). You can also get more detailed information on the wiring a dual speed pump to a ProLogic in this ProLogic Owner’s Manual on Page 14. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank You
Patrick

Thanks for the info. I have 4 relays in my control board. I actually have one that is not in use. So I could use that one for the second relay. And the prologic book has the wiring diagram. What would be the model number if I go back with a 2hp? As well as the gasket kit. That way, I can see if my wife wants to add any additional jets or waterfalls in out pool rehab project, and I’ll have enough gpm to cover it.
That’s great about the relay. Here is the 2 hp motor Century 2.0 HP Square Flange 48Y Dual Speed Up Rate Motor - UQS1202R - INYOPools.com and if you went this route you would not need a new impeller.Thank you Patrick
Really appreciate the help. I’ll be ordering soon when she decides. Thanks again.
Thanks so much Sdupontjr, please let us know how it turns out.
Have everything hooked up. Low works great. High will not come on. I’m getting 240 to the motor, but high won’t come on. They are wired accordingly to the prologic board. Aux 1 is low, works great. Filter pump is high. Relay engages, sends power to the motor, (checked with meter ) motor won’t come on. Am I missing something?
Also wired as such:
L1 - Hi speed
L2 - Common
A - Low speed
Power is getting to the motor but high wont engage. Also noticed that on back of motor, there is a metal “Y” that has a white looking plunger. When the aux 1 relay is energized (low speed) the white plunger on back of motor will energize causing motor to run. When the Filter pump relay (high speed) is energized, it does send 240 to motor, but the “y” will not energize the white plunger to make motor turn. I’m very mechanically inclined, but called electrician over to double check me on the wiring. Everything is correct. So either there is a problem with the motor high speed portion (possible factory wiring, jumper, etc) or we both are just over looking something.
It sounds like the motor is wired correctly and the motor is receiving the correct voltage. We’re going to contact our Century rep and see if he has any other ideas. We’ll let you know once we get a response.
I’m just curious as to how long before I hear something back? The motor clearly isn’t working like it’s suppose to. With all of this wait, how does the warrenty, return, swap out or whatever needs to take place work?
We probably won’t hear back from the Century rep until Monday or Tuesday. If you want to start the warranty process, you can contact our customer service department Monday morning. 877-372-6038.
Ok thanks. Just checking in. I’ll do that Monday for the “just in case”.
