Replace Entire Pump or just Motor

So our hayward super pump 1 HP motor was working fine and then all of a sudden yesterday my wife realized the water wasn’t circulating when it should have kicked on.  She went to check and power to the timer and heater we on but the pump wasn’t running.  However it was very hot to the touch.

She let it cool and tried to start it again.  It hums LOUDLY but never kicks over.  The pump is at least 5 years old and is exposed in the winters.  I have no issue replacing it as it seems to be shot or on its way out.

My question is, local pool company wants upwards of $650 to replace and install the same pump.  I can get the whole unit for ~ $325 shipped free or just the motor and seals for ~ $170 shipped free.

I was all about the motor then thought maybe I would be better just getting the unit all together even if the wet side is in good shape.  And the motor replacement seems lengthy 2-3 hours.  But then I realized if I replace the whole thing I have to cut the PVC and try to reconnect the plumbing which I also have no clue how to do.  I don’t know the piping unions I would need or have the tape or glue.  So I am sort of between a rock and a hard place.  I really don’t want to spend $650 on something that can be done for half the cost.

Thanks!

If the pump body is in good shape, I would just replace the motor. It a less expensive option and you don’t have to do any plumbing.

Check out our article titled “Pump or Motor: To Replace or Not to Replace”.

I decided to just get the motot and ordered through INYO.  Have the pump at home but haven’t attempted to replace.  the pool company agreed it is way easier to just to the motor and if I needed them to do it they would for ~ $100 fee.  So even if I can’t figure it out the entire issue would only cost me $250.  $150 if I can do it myself.  He told me if you are somewhat handy it shouldn’t be a problem.  He can replace them start to finish in 30 min or so.

Guess we shall see…
