Pump Size

for the last 20 years my pool has been running on a Jacuzzi Magnum Force pump, it finally went out and I reordered a 2 hp pump as that was what was suggested, based on my inf. I suppose. I’m not sure this is right, it’s installed with a TA 60D sand filterm 2 ys old, new sand all parts inspected and in fine working order. 1.5" pipes, 12,000 gal pool. My issue is that this sand filter should have a start PSP of 20 and clean @ 30 PSP and it starts at 28 and will not change, everything has been check for air leaks, clogs etc. the pressure in the pool jets seems to be normal, my pool looks great, I have a seperate pump for my polaris. The sand filter was replaced with the same updated version of the original. I just think my pump may be too powerful?

The 2 HP pump is a magnum force newer version and I’ve circled the skimmers …do not know how to figure that head whatever?

Based on this inf. what size pump should I be using?  I no longer have the old pump and cannot remember what HP it was or if I even knew and that’s why I ended up with this.  Everything is in order except the pressure …which leads me to believe the pump is too much?

absolutely -0- bubbles in pool or pump, one wouldn’t know there was water in the pump when running NO AIR, so clear, no bubbles.

Hi christinew0930,

Yes the 2HP Jacuzzi Magnum seems to way to big for your 12,000 gallon pool and for your TA60D sand filter. Normally you would size a pump to turn your pool over in 8 Hrs. Based on your plumbing set up the 2 HP Jacuzzi Magnum would be outputting roughly 100 Gallons Per Minute meaning that in 8 Hrs. it would be circulating 48,000 gallons or turning your pool over 4 times in 8 hours.

I would suggest the 1 HP Jacuzzi Magnum which is going to be in the range of 60 gallons per minute meaning it can turn over 28,000 gallons in 8 hrs. this is still above the 12,000 gallon mark but it is nice to have a bit of extra suction for vacuuming the pool.

The reason you were most likely seeing such a high pressure reading is that the TA60D sand filter is only designed to handle a max flow rating of 60 GPM and your pump was trying to output 100 GPM through the filter. This will cause high PSI readings, will shorten the life of your motor and potentially damage the internal components of the filter.

Another thing to consider is that your pool is plumbed in 1.5" pipe and 1.5" pipe can physically only handle 60 GPM going through it, so the larger 2 HP pump could potentially be starved for water as the 1.5" pipe cannot handle the volume of water the 2 HP pump is pumping.

One nice benefit of going to the smaller 1 HP pump is that it only draws 7 amps Vs. 10.5 amps on the 2 HP Pump meaning you will save roughly 35% on your operational costs with the smaller pump.

I hope this information helps, please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank You

Thank You Patrick…I ordered the pump Jacuzzi Magnum Force 1 HP and will switch out asap…do not want damage to anything. Unfortunately, I will have to continue to run until new one arrives, three to five days…yikes! The good news is this pump has only been pumping for a couple of weeks. Thanks to this forum I had already worked through the process of elimination and you confirmed…cannot thank you all enough!!

Christine,

I think you will be fine using the old pump for a few more days. Let us know how everything turns out.

Thank You

Patrick

Patrick~

Update …rec’d pump, installed pump, running fine.  The main issue, which was high psi, has been resolved. My ta 60d says the filter should run ar 20 and clean at 30 and I started up at 20 even …perfect!

Again, I cannot thank you enough for your instruction guide and guidance …this site is amazing!!

Sincerely,

Christine A.
