pump replacement

Hi- I have the following Doughboy pump and filter:

Pump-1 hp-10 amp, 3450rpm, Filter- DE, 20 sf, 50psi max, 50gpm. Pool is  38 X 18 x 4 about 10 years old.I think the pump is going, noisy and pressure is low at 5 psi with new gauge, initial is 11. So, In addition to the new pump, I want to have the return water circulate through 100 to 200 feet of 1 1/4 inch black well pipe near the pool -not elevated , for warmer water. Can I replace with a 1 1/2 hp two stage? Will the filter still be efficient with the extra hp?  Thanks

Hi Roboco,

The best bet would be if you could post us a photo of your current pump and filter, the more photos the better. This would allow us to make the best recommendation. I listed the instructions for posting a photo below…

Hi, thanks, the link would not open.

My biggest concern would be that the pump may fail prematurely as the 1.5 HP would be outputting more water then the filter is designed to handle. For example your filter most likely has a flow rating in the neighborhood of 50 GPM and the 1.5 HP pump will be outputting roughly 75 GPM, this ends up putting a lot of back pressure on the pump causing it to work much harder and failing quicker than usual.

My suggestion would be a complete new Pump and Filter Combo something like this Waterway 1.5 HP Dual Speed Pump with 22" Sand Filter

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Ok. Thanks again. What make/model would be a good 1 HP replacement?

Hi Roboco,

I would suggest this Hayward 1 HP Dual Speed Power Flo Matrix Pump
