I replaced the motor on my Hayward pump. It worked fine for a while then started leaking at the housing. I shut it down at the breakers and ordered a new Go Kit thinking it was the gasket. My wife grew impatient and tried starting it. On switching on she described a post pl and some smoke from the motor. Is it fried or can I replace a part? I ordered a new motor and if I can repair the old I will keep it as a spare back up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hello Willm1e61 - The smoke is usually the sign of a bad capacitor or windings. The capacitor can easily be replaced. If it’s the windings, the motor is done. Below are a couple guides on how to check these items.
