Hello there. I have my first pool. It came with my new house. It’s above ground and 21 foot diameter, about 4 feet deep. I have been having all kinds of not so fun experiences with it in the 2 months I’ve had it. Latest is I was vacuuming the pool and when finished, turned off the pump to change the filter setting to backwash. When I tried to turn the pump back on, the switch felt funny and there was the smell of burning plastic and a few wisps of smoke. Needless to say the pump did not come back on. When I looked at the pump I noticed for the first time that it said not to be used with permanent pools. Has my pump burned out? Do I need to replace it with another type of pump, or do I just need to replace a part? If I need to get a new pump what’s the best kind to get or what specs should I be looking for? ( I am in Montreal Canada) Help!!
Hi Phil,
I’m sorry about your issues with your pump. Yes, it does sound like your pump motor has burned up and your options would be to just replace the motor or to replace the complete pump. In a situation like yours, I would suggest the complete pump as the complete pump is almost the same price as the motor.
Can you let us know the make and model of your current pump along with the HP and Voltage rating? If you could post a few photos that would be even better. This information will allow us to make the proper pump recommendation.
Thank You
Patrick
Thanks for your reply. Sending the photos to your email address as I cannot figure out how to upload them here. I hope they give you all the information you need to have. It’s also been three days now since the pump died so if you have any advice about treating the water until I get the new pump I would appreciate that. I’m concerned about algae bloom showing up anytime now.
Thanks Phil, can you let me know the email address you sent the photos to?
Hi Phil,
Thanks for the photos! I would suggest replacing your entire pump with the PureLine Pure Pro XL 1.5 HP Pump
Thank You
Patrick
Thanks. Is this a hi efficiency pump? I prefer to get a high efficiency pump if possible for the energy and cost savings.
Hi Phil,
On the aboveground pool pumps they all run around the same amp. draw when comparing the same hp (for example comparing a 1.5 HP vs. a 1.5 HP) The inground pool pumps have standard models and energy efficient models but not the above ground pool pumps. You would see an energy savings if you went down from a 1.5 HP to a 1 HP the 1.5 HP pump draws 12 amps and the 1 HP pump draws 9 amps. Here is the Pure Pro XL 1 HP Pump I did notice your pump is a 1.5 HP pump with a lower amp draw of 9 but unfortunately this motor is no longer being manufactured.
Thank You
Patrick
Thanks again. So…for my 21 ft diameter pool between 4&5 ft deep, is a 1 HP sufficient, or should I stick with 1.5?. In each case, how many hours a day should I run the pump? And if I cannot find your brand of pump here in Montreal, are there other equivalent brands? I am seeing here brands like Sharkwave, FloPro, Maxflo, TurboFlo, LRC, Magnum, SuperPump, TriStar, Matrix, Distinction, Silensor, UltraPro. I want to replace ASAP.
Hi Phil,
We would suggest a 1 HP for a 21’ round pool. We do ship to Canada but if you need something quicker and need to pick this pump up locally then I would suggest the Hayward Matrix pump.
Thank You
Patrick
Thanks, Patrick. You’ve been amazing. And how many hours a day will I need to run that?
Thanks Phil! I would suggest 6-8 hours, if you don’t have a timer you can use something like the Intermatic Above Ground Pool Timer which automates the turning on and off of your pump, note that this timer can only be used on pumps up to 1 HP. If you go with the 1.5 HP Pump then you would need this Above Ground Pool Timer which mounts to the back of the motor.
Thanks
Patrick
