Pool Pump Problems

I have a Whisperflo WF-28 that I had replaced the motor on. Everything seemed to be ok and had been working for a couple of months. We went out of town for a couple of days and when we had gotten back the pump was empty and was very hot. So hot that the pump basket had melted. After letting cool and filling pump and line with water it turned back on and water flowed but water is seeping out of connection from top of pump. With this having happened would it be in my best interest to replace whole assy? What would be possible causes for this happening to begin with? Are the fittings threaded on top? Would I be able to unscrew and put something on threads to prevent leaking?

Before you replace the complete pump, I would try replacing the fitting at the top of the pump. The union for the Whisperflo pump is part number 11201-0154.

There are several reasons why your pump could have run dry. Check out part one of our blog titled “Why Are My Pool Jets Not Working?”. Any of those reasons in part 1 could have caused your problem.

If you have a union on the discharge, you can unthread it and wrap new teflon tape around the threads. If there is no union, you’ll have to cut the pvc and unthread the fitting.
