Pool pump

Have a 20,000 gallon pool 50 ft head and pump motor has had to be replaced 3 times in 5 years. Most recent motor is a 1hp 1.4SF Century Centurion motor installed by pool company 2 years ago. Thinking of doing myself this time. When I asked the pool company how long the pump should run per day then said 24/7. That seems like a good way to burn thru a pool pump motor. Is that accurate or am I off my rocker? Also, would a variable speed motor be good here or is that not necessary?

Hello Jim - The pool pumps do not need to run 24/7. The average run time is around 8 hours a day. Basically, the pump needs to run long enough to turn the body of water over once a day.

A variable speed pump is a good option for almost any application. For your size pool, we’d recommend something like the Pureline Prime model PL2605. The PL2605 is a 1.65 HP variable speed pump.
