Pool Motor

I have a PHP Series pump for my inground pool.  The old motor A.O.Smith 7-193631-24 failed on me and apparently has been discontinued.  It was about 10 years old.  I purchased a UST1072 based on A.O. Smith’s replacement suggestions. I received the new motor, installed it (it went together very well), replaced the ceramic seal and 0 rings as part of the replacement.  The new motor runs for 25 minutes, very smooth and quiet - gradually overheats and the internal motor breaker turns the unit off.  It cools off, comes back on for about 10 minutes, overheats and then turns off to cool down again. You get the picture.  I was noticing on the old motor that the amps are rated at 6.0/12.0.  The new motor according to the label is rated at 5.3/10.6 amps.  I called A.O. Smith and they said it was a faulty motor and arrangements are being made to send me a new motor.  Any advice or observations.  I don’t want to receive a new motor and waste time if it is going to do the same thing.  Thanks.

One other point.  I have gone through the entire system.  All filters are clean and the T-cell is clean.  When the unit runs - the filter pressure is 10 PSI which has been optimal in the past.   No bubbles in the clear strainer top and the unit holds its prime.  Thanks again.

Hi John2016,

I’m showing the 7-193631-24 is a 1 HP UST1102 Motor and not a 3/4 HP UST1072 motor if you paired the smaller 3/4 HP motor with your 1 HP impeller then the motor would behave as you described as the smaller 3/4 HP motor is being overworked by the larger 1 HP impeller. I do show the 1 HP UST1102 matches the amps of your old motor 6.0/12.0. I would see if you could get A.O Smith to ship out the UST1102 and not the UST1072.

Thank You

You’re welcome John let us know how it turns out.

Patrick:

I received the 1 hp motor you recommended last night and installed it.  The pump has now been running smoothly for 8 hours without any overheating problems.  It appears you were exactly right.  Thanks so much for helping me resolve the issue.  It is nice to have the pool operational again!

Best,

John

John 2016 that is awesome! I’m glad your back up and running.

Thank You

Hello,

I recently had to replace my old pump with a New AO Smith UST 1102 (1 hp).   I then Replaced the Housing (Hayward Supper II), Impeller, Impeller Ring and got the whole thing running again.   The new setup ran Fine for about 3 weeks then the motor started overheating after about 30-45 minutes.   It would stay off for about 35 minutes and come back on.   I just Removed all the vavles and waterways to ensure not obstructions but the Problem persists.    When the setup runs it pushes a ton of water at 15 PSI.  The Parts used were  AO Smith UST 1102,  Hayward SPX3005R (impeller Ring) and Sp3010-c, Hayward (spx3010c) impeller.

Is there something else i should consider to eliminate the issue of overheating?

Thank you in advance

Jay

Hello Jlutz4800 - We’d be glad to assist you. The issue with your pump is that you have the wrong impeller. You have a 1HP uprated motor but the SP3010-C is for a 1.5HP uprated motor. The problem is that the impeller is too heavy for the motor and it’s causing it to overheat and shut down.

The correct impeller for the UST1102 motor on a Super II is SP3007-C.
