I have a 40 foot in ground pool, 38,000 gallons. I use a Heyward DE filter and have had this filter for about 15 years. I switched from DE to Celeous Fiber about 6 years ago - never had a problem. I also have a FROG chemical system, BAC pack. Since we have had this pool, when the pool was opened, the opening pressure was 20. When the pressure reached 30, I would back wash, clean baskets etc, add the Celulose fiber, restart the pool filter and the pressure would go back to about 20 - 22. This season, after the pool was opened, the pressure opened at 32 and quickly went to 42. The chlorine went down zero. The guage at the top of the filter does not go to 0, it goes down to 12. I asked the pool store who opens and closes my pool what to do. His advise was to first adjust the chemicals. Brought the chlorine from 0 to normal and balanced the other readings. Backwashed this morning and the reading opened at 32. After a few hours, the reading went to 45. Short of buying a new filter, any ideas of what I can do. The water in the pool is very foggy which I attribute to the chemicals added.
Hi Mickey,
Have you cleaned your DE grids lately as if they are dirty this will increase your PSI. You may also have a bad gauge if you put your hand over your jets does the water come out as forcefully as it did before? If yes then you might want to try a new gauge, if the pressure out of the jets is less then the gauge is probably good.
It is possible that you have a blockage in the plumbing. You can put your valve in bypass which by-passes your filter, if your jets are stronger on by-pass then you know the problem is isolated to the filter.
If the problem is back at the filter then you will want to open up the filter and inspect your de grids to make sure none are broken. You will want to generally inspect the inside of the filter to see if anything is out of sorts.
I hope this gets you started on the right path and please feel free to post back with any question. Please keep us posted.
Thank You
Patrick
Thanks for the info. I’ll start tomorrow morning on all of your suggestions. Really appreciate your help. Now I’m just hoping I will be able to find peaople to fix this stuff.
Thanks again,
Mickey
Thanks Mickey, keep us posted.
Looks like it is the filter - might be a damaged grid. I have an authorized repair person coming on Tuesday. If this doesn’t work, I’ll buy a new filter. Thanks for your help. At least I learned a lot about my pool.
Regards,
Mickey
Thanks Mickey, we are glad you were able to isolate the issue. Let us know what the repair person has to say and if you are able to get the issue fixed.
Thanks Patrick
I have a pool with DE filter. I had a problem with the pressure increasing abnormally after a day of running. I ended up replacing the grids. I still have the same problem. I went ahead and removed the grids and cleaned them one by one. Put it all back together and started the pump. Did not add any DE. Ran the pump at about 5 psi, after about 4 hours, the pressure increased to 10 psi, the next day it ran and after about another 3-4 hours, the pressure increased to 15 psi. The water looks absolutely clear and there still is no DE in the filter. Why is the pressure increasing?
