New pump is leaking

Hi,

I just installed a new pool pump and it’s leaking from the bottom. Everything except the housing and diffuser has been replaced, after some research I have come up with nothing. Starting to consider having someone come fix it, but it really isn’t something I can afford at the moment so would appreciate some help.

Thanks

Hello Vwalkin - Did you install a new pump or a new motor? What is the make and model of the pump side?

New motor, impeller, gaskets, shaft seal and seal plate. It is a Pentair whisperflo Wfe-30.

If it’s leaking between the seal plate and motor, it’s the shaft seal. We recommend putting some rtv silicone around the metal cup before it is tapped into the seal plate. Then the white ceramic part of the shaft seal should be touching the smooth black side of the spring portion when the impeller is threaded on. If you use rtv silicone, wait 24 hours before running water through the pump. This will allow the rtv silicone to dry.

If it’s leaking between the pump volute (housing) and the seal plate, it’s likely the housing gasket. It may be pinched or not sitting in there correctly. In that case, you may need to reseat the gasket.

Assuming the shaft seal and housing gasket are ok, check the pump volute and seal plate for cracks.

The leak seems to be coming from between the seal plate and motor. I had Leslie’s put in the metal cup and housing gasket, they used silicone but forgot to mention the waiting 24 hours part. So do I need to have it redone?

I would have them install another shaft seal. That is the number one cause of these leaks.
