New Hayward propane conversion gas valve error

We ordered a conversion kit for our Hayward model H series heater this spring (Order #60NB807-1 on 4/29/16). We had our propane installer help wtih changing out the original natural gas valve for the new propane valve. We have just finished the rest of pool setup and started up the heater, and it runs fine for about 45 mins and then begins to smoke heavily. Finally, when we put it on standby, it gives us error code HF. The part number from our order is FDXLCNK0001. We know it’s installed properly and our gas line is correct, so please advise on what we should do… it definitely is not right.

Thank you!

Diane

Hi Diane,

Normally the HF error code means any or all of 3 items which need to be replaced… the igniter, the gas valve or the pcb board. Could you let us know which model Hayward Heater you have? Normally the process to diagnose which part or parts need to be replaced is by using a volt meter to each part and to see if each part is getting proper voltage. Here is the Hayward Heater Troubleshooting Guide which goes into the exact steps to determine which part is bad. Also here is a good thread on the topic https://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/92412-Hayward-H400ED2-heater-code-HF

Thank You

Thanks Patrick,

Our model number is H150FDN. We’ll check the igniter and pcb board as you suggest, but we just replaced the gas valve with the coversion kit recommended by Inyo. Also, the heater is firing up fine - it runs fun and is heating, but after 30-45 minutes runtime it starts to smoke like crazy. Based on my online research it sounds like the gas pressure is too low, so working on getting someone out to check that. If you have any other suggestions, based on this, that would be great. If it’s a bad gas valve, I’m assuming we could return it for a replacement, since it’s new? (I doubt that’s what is going on, but want to confirm.) Thanks!

Hi Diane,

Thank you for the update and please keep me posted on what transpires after the service company comes out. Yes if it is a bad gas valve we will definitely get you another one shipped out ASAP.

Thank You

Patrick

Super. We couldn’t get the technician until the 20th, as they are backed up. Meanwhile we ordered a manometer so we can check to see if it’s low gas pressure that’s the problem. PCB and Igniter are working and test out fine. Will post another update when we’ve checked the gas pressure. Thanks again!

Thanks Diane we will wait to hear back.

Hi Patrick,

My husband was able to test the gas pressure at the Inlet Pressure Tap plug and it measured 11.5w.c., so that is good. However, the Manifold pressure only measured 5.5 with the adjust screw fully turned to max pressure. The target is 6.8" - 7.0" w.c., so the valve is not supplying enough gas pressure to the burners. The replacement valve we have (which your service dept recommended for our heater model) is Item #FDXLCNK0001. Can you please confirm this is the correct part? If so, then it is not working properly.

Everything else checks out good. We have kids hoping to swim next week and hoping you can advise and ship out the correct part today so we have a hope of getting it running. Please let me know what we need to do on our end. Thank you!!

Just looking at the manual that came with the valve conversion kit, we are realizing that the 8 propane burner orifices were not included in our kit. Sorry - we just noticed that separate part for the propane orifices and myu husband says what he got in our kit was just the burner and the label. What it looks like we need is "Burner orifice, Propane #43 - 8 of them shuld have been in our kit. Would that change the pressure reading at the manifold? We are thinking this is the problem and wonder if they an ship out today via rush?

Sorry - what was in our conversion kit was the valve and label. (mistakenly typed burner in the previous post.)
