how to remove shaft seal on Sta Rite Dura-Glas pump

I’m trying to follow the instructions (How To Replace a Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro Pump Impeller - INYOPools.com; I couldn’t find instructions for DuraGlas) to replace a sta rite motor in a DuraGlas pump. After I unscrewed the impeller, the shaft seal is on the motor shaft side (see pic). Do I just lift off the shaft seal using a pair of pliers? And then the copper cone will come out? Excuse the stupid question but I don’t want to break anything.

Thank you for your help!

(This is a follow up to my order of a SQ1052 motor and GOKIT54.)

Regards, Ying

Hi, Ying. You can use pliers to remove the spring part of the pump seal. Then you will need to turn the seal plate over and knock out the other side of the seal. You can also follow Step 22-23 of the How To Replace a Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro Pump Impeller Guide or reference page 10-11 of the DURA-GLAS and MAX-E-GLAS™ Manual.

Thank you for your response. I have now removed both parts of the pump seal. To use the GOKIT54 seal, my understanding is that the copper cone needs to be removed, correct? Do I just pull the cone out from the top with brute force?

Thanks,

Ying

Hello Ying - Yes, you can pull out the cone using a pair of pliers. You may be able to loosen it from the back by using a flathead screwdriver and a hammer. Be careful not to chip the plate if you decide to hammer the cone out from the back.
