After 6 pool seasons, my 1.5 hp Hayward Super Pump is short cycling while under a water load. I disconnected it from the basket, checked the impeller, and it rotates fine without resistance. While disconnected, the motor runs fine and quiet. When I hooked it back up, the problem appeared again. So i closed the valve for incoming water, and while not under a water load, the motor runs fine and quiet. As soon as I open up the valve and allow water through, the pump short cycles for 20-30 seconds, and then shuts down completely. Every 5 minutes, this repeats. I have cleaned the filter and all baskets, so there there is not any unusual resistance. During the short cycling periods, the water is coming out the pool returns, and getting sucked from the skimmers, so I know the lines are not clogged. Any thoughts on what is going on with this pump motor while under a water load?
Hello Bartholet,
Your motor may be on its way out. I would check the pressure in the filter first. Make sure the pressure gauge does not exceed 10 PSI higher than the normal starting pressure. If so, replace the cartridge, or backwash the filter. Be it that under any water load the motor begins to fail, I would recommend replacing the motor and seals.
Thank you,
Inyo Alan
Thanks. When I pulled the motor, there was serious corrosion underneath, which I interpret as the seal begain to fail allowing water in… so I replaced the motor, and put in some new seals, and all is working again. Disappointed I only got 6 seasons from that motor, but it is what it is. The good news is, I did something I’ve never done before (replaced a motor and seals). INYO online guides were a huge help. Really appreciate the assist. Will start looking to this company for future purchases…customer service is awesome!
Thanks for the update. We’re glad everything worked out. Let us know if you need any help in the future.
