hayward spa light fixture

Haywood FixtureHave a hayward luminaire SP0591SL 120 v, would like to change from the 3G J & J to newer one (LXG). Tried neighbors bulb but there is a copper coil in the fixture that will not allow the bulb to screw in all the way. Can this coil be cut, what is its purpose? Or can we cut it and solder a small wire to the cut ends, so the bulb will fit?

Hello Dave103 - That copper coil inside the light fixture is there to cut the circuit to the light in the case that an incandescent bulb bursts. This would not be an issue with an LED bulb. I’m checking with our Hayward rep to see if the coil can be cut or modified. I’ll reply back as soon as I get an answer.

thanks

Below is the response from the manufacturer.

This design causes the breaker to trip if the bulb were to break causing power-off to a fixture and wiring possibly in contact with the water.  These fixtures were designed for specific bulbs.  Although the picture didn’t show up in the email, I’m guessing that we’re probably working with a DuraLite SP057x series or an AstroLite SP058x series.  These units are voltage and wattage specific and are tested to UL specifications.  Because of this, we can only recommend using the OEM style bulb for relamping.  That’s probably not what a light owner would like to hear if they have an LED bulb that would provide them a rainbow of colors, but it is important when we’re talking about electric submersible luminaries and safety.

Thanks, I guess we will try and bypass this feature.

Solved, was able to bend the coil , so an LED Bulb will fit and will work.  Was really not sure about haywoods reasoning as the pool light has no such feature/
