Hayward Salt system

I have a Hayward 40,000 gal salt system.  In 14 years I’ve changed out the salt cell at least twice and the controller once.  I currently have a situation where my controller is showing my salt content to low (around 1900).  Initially I kept adding salt but finally took a water sample in and found out that my salt was actually very high.  I learned how to recalibrate the controller so it would show normal/functional levels (around 3300), but within in a day the controller shows the salt as low again.  I’ve cleaned the cell very well and it seems to be producing chlorine when I recalibrate the controller back to (around 3300).  What do think my problem is?

Thanks

Brad

Hi Brad,

It sounds to me that the main PCB board has gone bad as many times when the PCB goes bad we see weird readings like this. We do carry the Hayward OEM PCB as well as an Aftermarket AquaRite PCB which is $100 less. Here is a Video on How to Replace an AquaRite PCB Board which you may find helpful.

Thank You

My Control Panel shows the system is generating chlorine, but is giving me very high salt readings.  The cell is not producing chlorine due to the high salt readings.  I replaced the salt cell last month and the PCB board last summer.  I noticed on the the PCB board there is a jumper between two post.  I had previously read that the jumper is there only if it is a certain T-cell, but I don’t remember if is was a T-15 or T-5.  Just curious if I remove the jumper this would correct my issues.

I changed out the main control board and installed the after market board and I am still getting a low salt reading.  I know the salt is high.  What else could be causing this?

Hi Martin,

You may have the wrong cell selected in your system. If it was set for T-15 and you have a T-5, this would cause you to get a low salt reading. Please take a look at the label on your salt cell and then follow the instructions in this Video on How to Install the Aftermarket AquaRite PCB which goes into detail about selecting your cell. As far as the jumpers, those are for setting the voltage and not the cell.

Yes, last night I did change the setting to reflect the T-15 cell, and it didn’t seem to work, but this morning the cell read the salt at 7900 which makes sense.  It now shows SHI (salt high), but seems to be generating sanitizer.  This week end I’ll drain some water out of the pool and refill it. Does the system sitll generate when the salt level is high?

Hi Martin,

If the high salt indicator is on, the Aqua Rite has stopped producing chlorine. I would test the water right from the return jet to see if you are getting a chlorine reading just to double check.

Thanks

Patrick

I installed the new board, but I am still getting strange readings.  It went from showing my salt hi to lo in the same day without me draining any pool water.  My system is still not working and I’m starting to get algae.  What should I do next?  getting desperate.

Hi Martin,

Do you know what your actual salt reading is? Have you tested your salt recently, if so what is the salt reading? Also when you installed the replacement board did you select the proper cell? Also here is a good document on How to Troubleshoot an AquaRite Salt System which may find helpful. In the meantime I would get chlorine in the pool as soon as possible, I would try to bring your chlorine up to at least 15 PPM of chlorine for 2-3 days and brush your pool walls, it is best to do this via liquid chlorine.

Thank You

Patrick
