Hayward 1.5hp not starting

My pump is new, first season of use, but it just started acting up yesterday. When I turn it on it will hum but not run. I unplug, remove lid and stick finger in impeller to turn slightly then replace lid and it will start up. But when I turn it off and back on, I have to repeat the same thing, which doesn’t work when trying to run it on a timer of course. Any thoughts on what the problem may be? Do I need to return it within the 1yr warranty? Thanks.

Mark - It sounds like it’s the capacitor. We have an article on how to test the capacitor. “How to Test a Pool Pump Capacitor

If you don’t want to go through all of that, the pump is still under Hayward’s warranty and they will take care of it. You can contact them directly at 908-355-7995.

I agree with that assessment, but Hayward says it will take 48 hrs for a warranty specialist to contact me with a response. Since I ordered it through INYO, will you overnight a replacement capacitor to me? I can’t wait 48 hours without water flow or the pool will get worse than it is. I appreciate your assistance.

Hello Mark - I’m in technical support so I can’t say for sure what they will do. You’d have to discuss that with our customer support representatives. 407-834-2200

In order to recommend the correct capacitor, you’ll need to pull the capacitor(s) from the motor and look for the specs. There should be an MFD (uf) and voltage rating listed on the capacitors. If you do not see any capacitors, you may have an older style motor. If that’s the case, the whole motor will need to be replaced.

If you find the capacitor specs, post them here and I can suggest the replacement.

Ok thanks.  It’s less than a year old so can’t imagine the capacitor is not available but I have a service ticket in with customer support now so will see what they say.
