I have solar heating panels on my roof approx 8-10 feet above pump. There is no check valve in the system that consists of pump, and sand filter only.Without this valve, does all the water flow back through the filter and pump when the timer shuts off? If so, can I place the valve between the pump and filter? That way I can shut off any water flow with the filter valve. Thank you!

In this scenario, you would have water flowing back both to the pool and back to your pump when the pump shuts off. We would suggest check valves as shown in the diagram below.
