Air bubbles

New to into pools. Love all the videos when I have an issue I need help with but have come across something that I have never seen and hard to believe. Pool: old maybe built in 80’s. Situation: high psi in DE filter 35psi, pump is not primed/has air in it. First thought: air leak or crack somewhere but no visible signs leak and did a smoke check. Found: pool only has two return jets on a deep end sit down bench with two small pipes from concrete surface connected to these pipes. They have suction on them creating the effect of a jet spa. What in the world are these suction tubes to jets int pool. Another note. It’s an old pump and it’s starting to make lots of noise but seems to work

Hi Frankg,

Could you post a few pictures of the areas you are discussing in your post as this would help us determine the best solution for you.

Thank You

Patrick, Thanks for the reply. I have attached a close up of the tube from surface to pipe to jet and another of the only two jets coming into pool from filter. The tubes have suction and cannot figure out what they do. If I plug the holes and stop the suction then the air injection stops and so does the return pressure to the pool. I guess first question is what in the world would these do, why would some one build it? The pump is loud and old is about to go so believe changing the whole pump assembly will help but just not sure what will happen with the suction tubes. I know what I want to do and just rebuild the entire skimmer, pipes and returns and add jets around pool but sure it will be too much of a cost for them.

Hi Frankg,

These are called therapy jet or venturi jets people commonly put these in swimouts as an area you can sit down and have the jet go against your back similar if you were sitting in a spa. The jet uses a combination of air and water to create the bubble effect, the air is drawn into the jet from the holes in the deck.

In most cases you would have the therapy jets but you would also have a few normal return jets around the pool.

Below is an image showing a diagram of how the air and water interact and a second of the jet body.
