The pump for my above ground 15x30 pool died last year and we need to replace it. We currently have a Hayward pump and Hayward DE filter. The pump has a horizontal discharge which allows for a very easy connection to the filter. However, I see that most pumps have a vertical discharge. Is it possible to use a vertical discharge with a DE filter?

You can use a vertical discharge but you will need to do some replumbing. You could go with this Hayward Matrix 1.5 HP Pump which allows for the ports to be rotated so you can use the pump as vertical discharge or horizontal discharge.
