2 speed pump, high speed not working

I have a Century Hi-flo 2hp with 2 speeds. The pump model is C48AA70A79R, volts 115, amps 13.5/4.7, RPM 3450/1725, FR 48Y, HZ 60, Type FC, PH 1, Code E.

This is the 2nd pump I’ve had to buy for our above ground pool. It’s less then 2 years old. The pump will only run on low. If I turn it off then switch it on to high, it starts slow then gradually gets faster. As soon as it sounds as if it’s running at the correct speed, it shuts off. It runs fine on low. If I turn it off then back on high it doesn’t come on. If I leave it off for awhile or run it on low for awhile then turn it from low to off then to high it does as stated above.

I have read that this could be caused by a bad capacitor. I do not know if my motor has a start capacitor or a run capacitor. I am also wondering if I should try lubricating it. I have not done so as I don’t want to make it worse.

The temps here in TN have been in the upper 90’s the last 2-3 weeks. Could the high temps have contributed to the issue?

Buying another new pump in less then 2 years is not what I’d like to do.

Any suggestions or help would be very apreciated.

Hi Stanley,

It sounds to me that possibly that your thermal overload protector is kicking in, most motors have a thermal overload that kicks in when the motor starts to run too hot, this is in place to protect the motor from getting damaged. It seems that when the motor revs up to the high speed it is starting to run hot and then the overload protector kicks in and shuts off the motor.

Let me run this by our sales rep. from our motor manufacturer to see if he thinks my assessment is correct and if so what are the options to fix.

Also a few questions for you…

  • Has this always been working this way or has this just started to occur recently?
  • What size filter do you have on your pool (sq. footage and filter type ie. sand, cartridge or de)
  • What size pipe / hose are you using? (1.25", 1.5" or 2")

Also if you want to post any photos to this thread it would be most helpful, I have listed instructions on posting a photo below.

Thank You

Patrick
