I have a Hayward Model GM245 Sandfilter. The unit age is unknown but at least 15 years. The water is hazy but chemically balanced. When I put a cellulose filter media in, the preasure does not go up…just squirts back in the pool. What is wrong?
If I need a new filter, what is it’s make and model number in the modern equivalent.
Hello RickShoe - A comparable replacement filter for the Hayward GM245 would be the Hayward S244T. The S244T is a 24-1/2" diameter tank that holds 300 pounds of sand.
As far as the cellulose filter media bypassing the filter, it could be a couple reasons. It could be an issue called “channeling”. Basically, channels can open up through the sand and water can pass through the filter without going through the media. Our friends at Trouble Free Pool have a good thread about fixing channels in sand filters.
Other reasons could be a broken lateral or standpipe. If this were the case you’d probably see some sand returning to the pool.
Hopefully this helps. Thank you for visiting INYOpools.com!
Thank you very much. This will seem astonishing to you; I can hardly believe it myself. We speak to our son every week, but he lives 800 miles from us. After talking to guys in the local stores I asked you guys. You see, my son is pool technician and goes out and answers calls like this. My wife told me call our son. I never think of him as a pro out in the field, I only think of him as my son. Anyway, he is familiar with the unit. It’s so old it never was new. He also knows me. He asked a couple of questions, like you did. It’s not shooting sand, only the media after I add it. He asked about leaks out the waste port. BOY Howdy! Was it ever! I plugged it up it was so bad. He told me the spider gasket was likely shot. He was right, only 2 of the 5 spokes were left. The pool is up and running now; we’ll see how it goes. The discharge port is open and there are no leaks.
Thank you very much for the modern model number. It may come to that. You’ve been very, very helpful!
