laminar jets choose right pump

Hi, I have 6 laminar jets in the pool deck.  When i bought the house it had a 1.5 HP Sta-Rite P6RA6F pump.  It went bad.  I replaced it with same model in 2012.  It burned up this summer.  This kind of suprised me, as this pump is only for these fountians and not used very much at all.  There are manual valves for the fountains.  They sit at about 30 percent open.  This gives about a 10 foot arch of water.  If I open them all the way up, they go 35+ feet.  I am wondering if the 1.5 HP pump is too much and keeping the valve 2/3 closed is not good for the pump?  I obviously dont need the water shooting 35 feet.  I supose I could use a variable speed pump, but the cost really jumps.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks pete

Hello Pete - Thank you for contacting Inyo. We have a very affordable 1.65THP variable speed pump. Take a look at Pureline model PL2605.

Hi, thanks, do you think that is too much of a pump for 6 fountains, and the valves on those are mostly closed?  Does that make the pump work harder to restict the output so much?

The variable speed pump wouldn’t be too much. You could run the pump on a lower speed and save a ton on the energy consumption.
